Not many are aware that, under the patronage of Guruvayur Devaswam, an Institute of Mural Paintings has been established in 1989 which offers Kerala mural painting classes. As part of renovation work, the paintings were restored with the participation of well known Mural artists like Pattambi Krishna Warrier, Mamiyur Krishnankutty Nair and others. At that time there were vary few artists who could take on traditional Kerala mural paintings. The temple authorities and prominent artists felt the need for preserving the traditional Kerala mural paintings by conducting mural painting classes young artists. This resulted in the establishment of the Institute of Mural Painting in Guruvayur.
National Diploma in Kerala Mural Painting
The institute offers mural painting classes in the Gurukula pattern. The duration of the course is five years. First two years serves as a preparatory course which includes Indian and Western Art history, Sanskrit, Shilpa texts and Aesthetics. During the last three years, specialized coaching is given in traditional Kerala mural painting. The curricula includes workshops, seminars, study tours and and participation in national level exhibitions and camps. On completion of the course, a National Diploma is awarded. The selection for mural painting classes is based on an aptitude test and interview. Only ten students are selected for each batch and they are provided with accommodation and scholarships.
